It’s Time to Learn Chinese

August 23rd, 2010 3 comments

While America seems to be running from our Christian roots and the biblical virtue which has provided the rich, moral capital for our unprecedented prosperity, the Chinese seem to be running in the opposite direction. The militant, atheistic communism they have embraced  has proven to be a morally bankrupt worldview providing the Chinese people with no moral compass to direct their day to day activities as a nation. Our Chinese friends are experiencing first hand the abject failure of centralized government and the resulting “naked public square” created by godless secularism. Where are they turning for answers? You may be surprised to find out.

Former Time correspondent, David Aikman interviewed Jiang Zemin, the former leader of Communist China in 2002. Aikman asked what Zemin wished for in regard to China’s future. Zemin’s response caught Aikman totally by surprise and shocked the liberal elites in the West:

“I would like for my country to become a Christian nation.” (Aikman, David. “A Report on Christianity in China: A Conversation With David Aikman.” Speech at the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington, September 26, 2002.)

When asked “Why?” Zemin explained how a panel of Chinese scholars had been assembled to study why China continually lagged behind the West in science, industry, and culture. After examining every possible explanation, they concluded that it was the religious heritage of the West that had allowed it to achieve such greatness. The summarized their findings as follows:

“One of the things we were asked to do was look into what accounted for the success, in fact, the pre-eminence of the West all over the world. We studied everything we could from the historical, political, economic, and cultural perspective. At first, we thought it was because of a more powerful military. Then we thought it was because you had the best political system. Next we focused on your economic systems. But in the past 20 years we have realized that the heart of your culture is your religion: Christianity. This is why the West is powerful. The Christian moral foundation of the social and cultural life was what made possible the emergence of capitalism and then the successful transition to democratic politics. We don’t have any doubt about this.” (Quoted from Jesus in Beijing: How Christianity is Changing the Global Balance of Power, by David Aikman.)

So while the Chinese are awakening from a bad dream called “atheistic communism” and turning to Christianity for answers, many in America today are ready to jettison biblical morality in favor of secular statism and political correctness.

We can build our foundation on vapid values like those we read in Chinese fortune cookies, or we can establish our lives on the rock-solid principles of the Word of God.

America – its time to listen to our Chinese neighbors and return wholeheartedly to Christ and His Truth. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord!

Bad Ideas = Bad Consequences

One of my joys is teaching young people the importance of having a biblical worldview. Worldviews are similar to contact lenses. When you have the right prescription, they allow you to perceive the world around you with clarity. A bad prescription results in blurred vision, a pounding headache and a host of other undesirable side effects. A good worldview, one that corresponds with REALITY, will work in real life. It makes sense. It is livable. It bears good fruit. A bad worldview is like spitting in the wind. It fails to square with reality and produces a myriad of pain and suffering. Let me illustrate.

Abortion, ala Roe v. Wade, was a very bad idea. We often debate the moral implications of this horrid decision, with over 50 MILLION dead babies, and 100 MILLION emotionally, spiritually and physically scarred mothers and fathers left in its wake as prime evidence. But we need to look at another ticking time bomb this bad idea has created.

As a result of this ill conceived “right” we now have over 50 million fewer Americans. These are men and women who would now be in our workforce, perhaps creating new technologies , starting new companies AND paying taxes. The Heritage Foundation reports  that by “2015, Social Security will begin to inflict massive permanent annual deficits on American taxpayers. And Social Security is just one of the Big Three entitlements (Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid) that is set to bankrupt our country. Unless major reforms are made, spending on just these three programs alone will consume all federal government revenues by 2052.”

Ideas have consequences. The Bible tells us that God will not be mocked. Whatever a man sows he will reap (Galatians 6:7). We have selfishly sacrificed our own future on the altar of sexual pleasure and now it’s time to pay the bill. As my generation ages and looks to their children to provide for them in their golden years, they will be shocked to discover they have murdered the very ones God intended for their blessing.

The Lord, the Author of Reality, warns that, “Those who plant injustice will harvest disaster” (Proverbs 22:8, NLT). It’s harvest time in America. May God have mercy on our nation by allowing true brokenness and repentance to grip the hearts of our people. He is our only hope.

Truthless Love

Anyone making a public stand for righteousness in the larger culture will come under attack from the “love police.” No, this is not a rock band from the 60’s making a comeback. I’m referring to those well-meaning, politically correct, moral relativists who have no tolerance for those who have the audacity to suggest that the behavior of someone else may be immoral, perverse or outright wicked. I recently saw Keith Olbermann, one of the news anchors for MSNBC, and a card carrying member of the “love police” in action lambasting those who believe same-sex marriage is wrong. The essence of his argument was this: Why can’t you mean, despicable, bigoted, right-wing, religious zealots allow people to “love” whomever they please? Life is too short for hatred. What’s the big problem with allowing people who “love” one another to be married?

Well, here’s the problem. A lot of destructive activities occur under the banner of “love.” We approve of pre-marital sex when both parties “really love each other.” We justify co-habitation as an experiment for marriage when the couple is “in love.” Husbands leave their wives because they are no longer “in love” and because they are now more “in love” with another woman. You see, “love” becomes merely a smoke screen to cover our selfish desires for physical pleasure at any cost.

This is the tragic result of seeking love apart from truth. Love has no content, or boundaries, apart from truth. Truth is a pre-requisite for love. Without the strong banks of truth, this river called love becomes a polluted swamp filled with all kinds of strange and dangerous perversions.

This is why love and truth must always be married.
