The Founders on Fiscal Responsibility

September 12th, 2011 2 comments

America’s Founders shared a common philosophy on public spending and debt. In these times of reckless and immoral Federal spending, it would serve us well to return to the wisdom of our forefathers.

Consider this admonition from Thomas Jefferson for starters:

“…we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our election between economy and liberty, or profusion and servitude.”

Perpetual debt makes slaves of us all! This is why Jefferson and our Founding Fathers believed in the biblical principle of frugality.

Jefferson said, “I …place economy among the first and most important of republican virtues, and public debt as the greatest of the dangers to be feared.”

If public debt is the greatest of dangers to be feared, what would Jefferson think about our burgeoning federal deficit today?!

As we set our sights on the 2012 election, we must be committed to electing men and women who are committed to cutting government spending and balancing our government’s books.
