Property a God-Given Right?

Where did our Founding Fathers come up with the idea that the right to own property is a God-given, inalienable right?

Answer: They read their Bible!

Our right to own property flows out of our duty to work. This goes back to the Dominion Mandate in Genesis 1:28:

“Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

As we take the raw materials of the earth and mix them with Holy Spirit ingenuity to create something that blesses and serves people, we have the right to own that idea or property.

The duty to work leads to the power and privilege of creating. That which we create through our labors, we rightfully own. Consider the words of Solomon:

In all labor there is profit, but idle talk leads only to poverty. (Proverbs 14:23, Amplified)

Private property is designed to give incentive for hard work.

Luke 10:7 says, “the laborer is worthy of his wages.”

When you work, you are entitled to enjoy the fruit of your labor.

Listen to the words of the Prophet Isaiah:

“They shall build houses and inhabit them, and they shall plant vineyards and eat the fruit of them. They shall not build and another inhabit; they shall not plant and another eat [the fruit]. For as the days of a tree, so shall be the days of My people, and My chosen and elect shall long make use of and enjoy the work of their hands.” (Isaiah 65:21-22, Amplified)

God is the Owner of all things. However, He has not only given us the authority to steward what He has given to us, but He also expects a return on His investment! We are called to maximize the gifts and talents God has placed in our hands for the service of others and for His glory! (Matthew 25:14-30)

To obey God fully in the stewardship of His stuff, we create governments for the purpose of protecting our lives, our freedom of conscience, and our property. This is why God gave the command, “Thou shall not steal.” Government exists to protect private property.
