The Church: Called to Model Truth

The word “church” for most people brings to mind images of brick and mortar, stained glass or pristine white steeples. But the church is not a building. Our English word “church,” when traced back to its roots, actually means “belonging to the Lord.” The church is comprised of those who have been redeemed by the precious blood of Christ and who are now gathered together for worship and warfare.

This new community of believers is to be marked by an important quality which sets it apart form the rest of the world – TRUTH. Paul describes the church as “God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth” (I Timothy 3:15 NIV). Foundations and pillars are critical to the long term success of any structure. A church without truth is destined for demolition.

God is truth (Psalm 31:5; Isaiah 65:16), Jesus is the embodiment of truth (Ephesians 4:21; John 14:6) and the Holy Spirit is the “spirit of truth” (I John 5:6). It logically follows that Christians, those who view themselves as disciples of Christ, should seek to embody truth in the same way Jesus did.

When an unbeliever comes to one of our gatherings does he/she see truth modeled in our lives? Unfortunately, our churches are often filled with people hiding behind religious facades. The Christian band, Casting Crowns, captures the state of much of the church in their song “Stained Glass Masquerade.” They write:

Are we happy plastic people
Under shiny plastic steeples
With walls around our weakness
And smiles to hide our pain
But if the invitation’s open
To every heart that has been broken
Maybe then we close the curtain
On our stained glass masquerade

We are fortunate to be in a church culture which has consistently modeled authenticity, openness and transparency. We must diligently guard and nurture this atmosphere through the honest sharing of our lives, both the victories and the failures, so that truth is displayed before the watching world.

I’ll be preaching this Sunday on the importance of telling the truth to yourself, others and to God. I hope you can join us!

Great to see you back into blogging, and still hitting folks between the eyes with truth. I don’t feel bothered by this article, so I am either doing it right, or totally deceived. I vote for the former, but am willing to hear from he who is my leader and Pastor. I have loved your expose on the church lately and your transparency before us. Yeah, we are (I am) hypocrites to some degree. Yeah we live sometimes pretending nothing’s wrong! That’s why I like your inclusion “both the victories and the failures” in your article. You my friend are a radical, I love it!

You are an amazing teacher! You not only speak sometimes-hard-truths that we need to hear, but your transparency as a leader gives people the courage to be real & to seek Truth whole-heartedly. Thank you for being such an awesome Pastor!
