The Extravagant Creativity of God

I am in the midst of teaching one of my favorite college courses, “The Nature and Attributes of God.” For the one who knows and loves God, the universe becomes a place of great wonder and glory. In fact, the created world is a magnificent masterpiece which exists to magnify the greatness of God.

The Apostle Paul tells us, “For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.” (Romans 1:19-20)

I am fortunate to live close enough to my office that I can walk to work whenever I please. No traffic jams, no stop lights. It’s wonderful. Today it’s cold and sunny in
my corner of Indiana. The snow was glistening white, the air crisp and fresh, and each step of my journey was accompanied by the sound of a clear “crunch” beneath my feet.

It was during one of those “crunches” that it dawned on me! Like Moses and the burning bush, I was on holy ground. It was walking on a snowy pavement made with tiny masterpieces. Each and every snowflake is absolutely unique. If we could take the time to painstakingly examine each under a high powered microscope, we would see not a blob of frozen ice, but a magnificently designed jewel!

Since God is infinite in all of His attributes, it should not surprise us that every snowfall is an extravagant display of mind-boggling genius. Each snowfall is like taking every great work of art throughout history, throwing each of them on the ground, and turning them into ordinary pavement to walk on. God’s masterpieces are so numerous it requires a fleet of large plow trucks to push them into piles at the local Wal Mart parking lot! Truly, the glory of God is all around us and we fail to appreciate it.

The next time you are out shoveling you driveway, or making a snow man, or simply staring at the thick frost on your windshield; take a moment to consider the creative genius of your magnificent God. Pause from you labors to worship Him. Maybe even fall to the ground and make some snow angels.

God’s glory is screaming. The ground under your feet is holy. Let’s pause to enjoy Him.
