It’s Time to Learn Chinese

While America seems to be running from our Christian roots and the biblical virtue which has provided the rich, moral capital for our unprecedented prosperity, the Chinese seem to be running in the opposite direction. The militant, atheistic communism they have embraced  has proven to be a morally bankrupt worldview providing the Chinese people with no moral compass to direct their day to day activities as a nation. Our Chinese friends are experiencing first hand the abject failure of centralized government and the resulting “naked public square” created by godless secularism. Where are they turning for answers? You may be surprised to find out.

Former Time correspondent, David Aikman interviewed Jiang Zemin, the former leader of Communist China in 2002. Aikman asked what Zemin wished for in regard to China’s future. Zemin’s response caught Aikman totally by surprise and shocked the liberal elites in the West:

“I would like for my country to become a Christian nation.” (Aikman, David. “A Report on Christianity in China: A Conversation With David Aikman.” Speech at the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington, September 26, 2002.)

When asked “Why?” Zemin explained how a panel of Chinese scholars had been assembled to study why China continually lagged behind the West in science, industry, and culture. After examining every possible explanation, they concluded that it was the religious heritage of the West that had allowed it to achieve such greatness. The summarized their findings as follows:

“One of the things we were asked to do was look into what accounted for the success, in fact, the pre-eminence of the West all over the world. We studied everything we could from the historical, political, economic, and cultural perspective. At first, we thought it was because of a more powerful military. Then we thought it was because you had the best political system. Next we focused on your economic systems. But in the past 20 years we have realized that the heart of your culture is your religion: Christianity. This is why the West is powerful. The Christian moral foundation of the social and cultural life was what made possible the emergence of capitalism and then the successful transition to democratic politics. We don’t have any doubt about this.” (Quoted from Jesus in Beijing: How Christianity is Changing the Global Balance of Power, by David Aikman.)

So while the Chinese are awakening from a bad dream called “atheistic communism” and turning to Christianity for answers, many in America today are ready to jettison biblical morality in favor of secular statism and political correctness.

We can build our foundation on vapid values like those we read in Chinese fortune cookies, or we can establish our lives on the rock-solid principles of the Word of God.

America – its time to listen to our Chinese neighbors and return wholeheartedly to Christ and His Truth. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord!

Imagine a nation with billions, armed with a cultural understanding of honor and loyalty, and then forged together with a system of Biblical worldview. If only China can be birthed with a spirit of true sonship…

Sounds like a noble calling for a kingdom son with a Chinese heritage, fluent in Mandarin, a second generation PK who is being totally messed up by the Father’s love. Know anybody like that?????

Couldn’t agree more Ron! I believe in the coming years, as the faulty foundation of communism collapses, the church will be pulled into a vortex of hunger for God among the Chinese people…the Holy Spirit is making sure of this as we speak. We have a woman from our congregation teaching english in China and she basically shared that the spiritual climate there is reaching “critical mass.”
