Living as Marked Men #2 – Clarity in Our Convictions

June 29th, 2010 1 comment

As we approach our 234th birthday as a nation, America is adrift in postmodern relativism. When it comes to moral clarity, the ability to clearly differentiate right from wrong, it seems we have both feet firmly planted in mid-air! Politically correct postmodernism leaves you morally neutered. To declare anything as “wrong, immoral, perverted” (choose the morally clear adjective of your choice) is to invite the wrath of those whose only virtue is tolerance. Unfortunately, tolerance of everything only serves to create moral confusion. It does not offer any help as we seek to successfully navigate REALITY. Only truth can do that, and only those who know the TRUTH (His name is JESUS), can help steer the ship.

That’s why it is so important to know what you believe and  why you believe it. But our respnsibility doesn’t stop there. We have a moral responsibility before God to proclaim that truth with both passion and clarity to a lost world groping around in a dark, moral fog.

Perhaps we can learn something from one of our Founders, John Hancock. He was the first one to sign his own death warrant, a document we have come to know and love as The Declaration of Independence. Acting upon the clarity of his convictions, he signed his name in large letters, so that everyone knew where he stood on the issue. Because of this courageous act of moral clarity and conviction, his name is now synonymous with everyone’s signature. When we are asked to sign our “John Hancock” on a document, it should be a perpetual reminder of the power of clarity in our convictions.

What does your life stand for? How large are your letters? Do others know where you stand on the issues?

Living as Marked Men -#1 Consistency of Character

June 29th, 2010 3 comments

A couple of week’s ago I had the pleasure of preaching a Father’s Day message entitled, “Living as Marked Men.” If you were out of town and missed our Sunday celebration, I want to encourage you to go to our web site and listen to the podcast. It was a strong call, especially to the men, to live lives that are marked by three things. I want to share the first point with you in this blog:

#1: Live a Life Marked by Consistency of Character

How we need godly examples of spiritual “long distance runners” in the Body of Christ. These are men who demonstrate faithfulness and consistency in their relationship with Jesus. They aren’t shooting stars who make a big flash and then fade just as quickly from the scene. These are men who consistently do the right things. They have developed a “rut” called righteousness. They are men with single-minded pursuit of Christ and His kingdom.

When I think of my Dad, I see a man marked by consistency of Christlike character. Two words embody the scope of over seven decades of living: Men & Marriages. On Tuesday nights, he’s ministering to men. On Sunday afternoon, he’s ministering to marriages. This is who he is and what he does. Everything else is extra.

He has been a man a one message: death to self. Die to your own agenda. Let Christ have his way in you. How we need to men of one Lord, one King, one message, one passion. As another great man of God, Ed Cole, used to say: Manhood and Christlikeness are synonymous. Let’s resolve to be men who are consistent in the display of Christlike character.

I’m Back in Action

June 23rd, 2010 22 comments
After a very strange blog meltdown, which sent our brightest IT minds (I am not one of them) scrambling for answers, I now have a brand new, bionic blog that is ready for action!
I have had many of you asking, “Why aren’t you writing anymore?” There’s nothing more frustrating than taking the time to share your thoughts in writing with an audience of NONE! I was writing, but the entries were not going anywhere. So I gave up on writing until I could once again communicate with someone (aka YOU!)
So take this as a warning…a fresh burst of blogs is about to be born! If you received this blog blurb, take a minute and let me know so I will know I am really back in action!
